In our flowering maple hardiness trials, we have found a few species and cultivars of abutilon which, when planted early in the season in well-drained sites, will perennialize. As with marginally hardy salvias, we recommend that abutilon not be pruned to the ground in the fall. Instead, we like to wait until early spring, and then give our flowering maples a haircut when we see how far back they have died over winter.

The summer and fall-flowering abutilon delights gardeners, butterflies and hummingbirds with its pendent bell-shaped flowers available in an array of rich colors including yellow, orange, pink, red and even bicolor. Abutilon is a low growing woody subshrub that acts as an herbaceous perennial in colder climates. Abutilon looks great planted in mass or weaving throughout a mixed border. Flowering maple is also great in a container or a hanging basket, where its downward facing flowers can be viewed face to face. The key to success with abutilon is good winter drainage. Plant them high and dry (in the winter) and they will delight you for years in your garden.

Abutilon is in the mallow family so be sure to check out our other mallows for sale.

Abutilon 'Canary Bird' is a marvelous hummingbird plant that has survived 6 degrees F in our garden. Abutilon megapotamicum is a fun and easy-to-grow hummingbird magnet for the perennial border. In the garden or in a hanging basket, Abutilon megapotamicum spreads to several feet wide in a single season. In the wild Abutilon megapotamicum reaches 8' tall, but in temperate climate gardens it rarely exceeds 6' tall x 10' wide and less when grown as a container plant. From late summer until frost, the plants are laden with charming 2" hanging, lantern-like flowers composed of red calyces above the yellow petals, ending with their bright red privates dangling beneath...all carefully arranged between the thumb-sized green leaves. If so, flowering maples will generally re-sprout from somewhere below the ground to slightly above the soil level. If your plant grows too large, you can cut it back all the way to the ground and it will quickly re-flush. About the only time we don't recommend cutting abutilon to the ground is in fall or winter. The ideal time to prune would be just prior to bud break in spring.

There will often be very little dieback of stems during mild winters, in which case little to no pruning is necessary come spring.
