Arundo

Arundo is a genus of extremely tall reed grasses native to Europe and Asia, some of which can grow up to 30' in their native habitats. Garden variety arundo selections do not get quite that large, but are still best suited for the back of the border.

Arundo plants prefer moist soils but, like most ornamental grasses, grow well in almost any soil type including clay soils and very lean soils. Arundo prefer plenty of water but will grow fine in drier conditions and will tolerate saline coastal environments. These ornamental grasses grow best in full sun and will spread into an attractive, dense patch in just a few years. Arundo species have fibers rich in silicon which makes them unpalatable to deer, rabbits, and insects. They are tough, low maintenance plants which makes them perfect for rain gardens.

In addition to their value as ornamental grasses, Arundo species also have a wide variety of economic uses. For those of you who played a woodwind instrument in school, Arundo donax was the source of your reeds. In addition, the hollow reeds have been used to make reed flutes, pan flutes (does anyone remember Zamfir?), fishing poles and walking sticks. Arundo species are currently being studied as source plants for the paper and cellulosic ethanol industries, as fuel sources for heaters and as phytoremediation plants that can clean soil and groundwater of arsenic, cadmium, and lead. In California and Hawaii, Arundo plants spread rapidly, especially in riparian areas, but arundo ornamental grass is well-behaved in the Southeast. The only drawback was the fading of the leaf variegation in warm weather. Arundo 'Peppermint Stick', imported from the Shanghai Botanical Garden by the late plantsman Greg Speichert, solves that with striped leaves just as vivid in summer as in spring. Arundo 'Peppermint Stick' forms sturdy 12' tall canes, adorned with wide green and white striped leaves. In fall, the clumps are topped with 18" tall bronze-colored plumes. Arundo may get too large for small gardens, but it is NOT an invasive plant (displacing natives in functioning ecosystems), since it neither runs or produces viable seed.

Interesting factoid:Arundo donax is the source of reeds for wind instruments.

Arundo donax is also a great cut for flower arrangements, both the foliage in new growth, or all summer long, as well as the glorious large flower heads in fall. The foliage lasts for several weeks in a flower arrangement.

In mild winters, or a zone 8 winter, the stems do not die to the ground and put out side shoots from most nodes. These small side shoots can be rooted.

Maintenance consists of cutting the stems to the ground before new growth starts in the spring. This need not wait until then if one wants to cut the stems down earlier. Though a matter of opinion, the stems that survive winter and produce multiple side shoots are a bit shabby looking.

Arundo donax 'Peppermint' thrives in full sun in average to wet soils. It will perform quite well in part shade, though is more likely to lean when grown in too much shade.

Watch our Plant Spotlight video for more information.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Arundo-donax-Peppermint-Stick.i-6677.s-65935.r-1_202eba5d-5b2e-488c-851e-24c361a12d89.jpg?v=1792073229
