Stout 51) Hemerocallis 'Autumn Minaret' is a reliable, passalong deciduous A.B. Stout hybrid that still ranks high on my list of favorite garden-worthy daylilies. In July and August, Hemerocallis 'Autumn Minaret' is topped with rigid, 75" tall, see-through stalks of fragrant yellow flowers with a dark peachy "eye" marking on every other petal...attractive to hummingbirds and gardeners who like daylilies they can look up to. I can think of few other daylilies that blend as well in the perennial border during a time that color is so valuable.

Maintenance:
Hemerocallis, daylilies, are quite low maintenance; yet they benefit from a few properly timed tidying-ups that are simple and quickly accomplished. It helps to understand their normal life cycle: New daylily foliage is produced after winter gives way to spring. It is at this time quite clean and fresh and lovely. Yet it often becomes shabby by bloom time, it has worked so hard to produce all of its flowers. As the floral display is winding down the plant starts to put up a whole new flush of foliage. The flawless fresh new foliage might go unnoticed by the unobservant gardener but it is produced nevertheless. If at this point the whole plant is cut back hard, either to the ground or to several inches tall, not only will all of the spent flower stalks be removed but so too spring's now shabby foliage. What one is left with is clean foliage for the remainder of the growing season. And the process of cutting it back takes only a few minutes at most per plant.

Another time to cut daylily foliage down is after frost has killed the foliage. It has often been observed that this foliage will harbor aphids over winter if not removed. In mild-winter areas the daylilies described as evergreen might produce foliage during every mild spell. One needs to periodically check for aphids.

Growing Conditions:

Hemerocallis, Daylilies, are almost fool proof. They will thrive with full sun all day long yet still bloom most satisfactorily with fewer hours provided they have at least 6 hours of full sun. They will survive dry spells though they will not perform in chronically dry sites.

Garden Value:

The floral display of Hemerocallis is big and bold and bright. The flower is the classic, large, creamy-white cup typical of the species...except Zantedeschia 'White Giant' has been doing some really good steroids. In our garden, we have only been able to muster 4' tall stems, 2' long x 1' wide foliage and 5.5' tall flower spikes, but that's still not bad. Keep in mind the height increases each year as the diameter of the tubers increase.

Maintenance:

Calla lilies (Zantedeschia) are low maintenance. To keep them at their most attractive state, merely remove leaves and flowers as they fade. When grown in an area with alternating warm and cold spells in the winter, the lush growth produced by Zantedeschia aethiopica during a warm spell can be frozen by a cold spell; merely cut away the damaged foliage and they will soon put up new growth. They do not seem to be harmed by this interruption. The other commonly grown species remain dormant through the winter.

Growing Conditions:

Zantedeschia aethiopica is at its best when grown in a wet site. Indeed it will thrive grown in a pot submerged in water. Its performance in a drier location will be disappointing. Please note that this applies to this one species of calla lily, Zantedeschia aethiopica. The other commonly grown species:the yellow flowered Zantedeschia elliottiana, the white flowered, white speckled leafed Zantedeschia albomaculata and the pink flowered, Zantedeschia rehmannii will thrive in soils of medium moisture level. This also applies to the hybrids between these 3 species. All are winter hardy in zone 7 so the tubers can be left in the ground over winter. All want sun for at least half a day. It is best to remove spent flowers so seeds are not produced. Named cultivars could be swamped by inferior seedlings if the seed was allowed to drop and grow.

Natural Impact:

The flowers of calla lilies are of course very showy and dramatic. They are also superb cut flowers, lasting many weeks. The broad foliage of most species is also an asset, contrasting with finer textured plants.
