Calamintha

Calamintha is a genus in the mint family that contains 8-30 species of small, oregano-leaved perennials depending on which plant taxonomist you are talking to. Calamintha leaves are popular in Italian and Middle Eastern cooking because they taste like a combination of mint and oregano (let's call it 'Moregano'!). Calamintha leaves are also used to make a minty tea that reduces flatulence...Classy!

The most popular ornamental species for the South is Calamintha nepeta, but others such as C. grandiflora, C. sylvatica, C. officinalis and C. acinos are well-known in herb-garden circles. The clouds of tiny flowers that cover calamintha plants in summer and fall attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden. Calamintha prefers a dry, sunny garden site and looks great woven into an herb garden, a perennial border or as a filler in a mixed container. If you plant Calamintha along a pathway, you will be greeted with a minty fragrance as you brush by the leaves. As a bonus, deer do not like to eat calamintha. I guess that's why their breath is so bad.
