Cardiocrinum

Although well-established in Europe, cardiocrinum is rarely grown in the US outside the Pacific Northwest. We hope to change this and get gardeners interested in cardiocrinum and its impressive, butterfly-attracting flower stalk with up to 40 fragrant Easter lily-like blooms.

The name cardiocrinum is simple to break down...the leaves are heart-shaped (cardio) and the flowers are lily-like (krinum). In Nepal, cardiocrinum leaves and roots are used in traditional medicine and flutes are made from the hollow stems. Cardiocrinum is a magnificent plant but, from seed, it takes 7 years to reach flowering size. After it flowers, the main bulb dies and is replaced by offsets which take 3-5 years to bloom. This is a plant for a patient gardener!

Cardiocrinum prefers part shade, lots of compost and consistently moist soils, but is otherwise easy to grow. Plant the bulbs with the nose at soil level. For years, I'd hear the oft-repeated line about cardiocrinums not growing in hot climates...well, hogwash. The problem is poorly stored dormant bulbs, which are usually DOA. We have 6-year-old seedlings in the garden that have now flowered twice. These quasi-monocarpic (main plant often dies after flowering, leaving small offsets) lilies grow as a basal set of bold-textured leaves until they store enough energy to produce a massive 8' tall spike in summer, laden with up to 20 large, white, fragrant flowers with an inner purple flush. After flowering, sow the seed or bulbils for the next generation...simply stunning. Cardiocrinum giganteum was named as one of the top 200 plants of the last 200 years by the Royal Horticultural Society...quite an honor. Light shade or morning sun, in slightly moist soils, is best for siting these in the woodland garden...now get busy with your cardio workout!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Cardiocrinum-giganteum.i-9310.s-66815.r-1_4f91d089-b2e5-4c69-9a8e-4890d725b0c7.jpg?v=1777663631
