The nymph Chelone was too loud at Zeus' wedding and as punishment was transformed into a tortoise by the angry god, condemning her to eternal silence. Chelone's summer-borne flowers look somewhat like a white or pink turtle's head, hence the scientific and common names.

Growing and Caring for Turtlehead

Chelone is a great plant for the Southeast because not only is it pretty, but hummingbirds and butterflies like it and deer avoid it. In the wild, turtlehead grows in shady, damp habitats but in the garden it tolerates conditions from soggy to typical garden soil in a sun to part sun location. Some selections are drought-tolerant.

Chelone glabra 'Black Ace' is a 2001 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction of an amazing native perennial (Canada south to central Alabama) that we picked up and subsequently named from NC plantsman, Dr. Craig Moretz. This amazing selection of our native white turtlehead has very dark foliage with an amazing black cast when it emerges in spring. Growing rapidly in moist soils, it gently spreads, and quickly reaches a mature height of 6'. In hot summer climates, the black foliage coloration will change to green by late summer. Also in very late summer, the clumps are topped with terminal clusters of pure white, snapdragon-like flowers...a favorite of butterflies and landscape designers.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Chelone-glabra-Black-Ace.i-3746.s-61003.r-1_8248fd15-e522-483f-8a22-05e82090d524.jpg?v=1791485541
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/collections/Chelone-glabra-Black-Ace-1900x350_b7571a40-c3db-4ab4-9b08-58536095c173.jpg?v=1682532479
