Cryptomeria

We offer an ever-expanding selection of dwarf and slow-growing cryptomeria. Although cryptomeria don't have the color selection of chamaecyparis, these evergreens make up for it in their dramatic texture and contorted growth patterns. Many of the cryptomeria varieties that we offer are suited for a small garden.

The genus cryptomeria is monotypic whose lone species, Cryptomeria japonica, is native to China and Japan. Although commonly called a Japanese cedar, Cryptomeria japonica is not a true cedar (Cedrus). In the wild, Cryptomeria japonica grows into a huge tree that can sometimes exceed 230' in height and is an important timber tree in Asia. Here in the US, we grow certain selections of Cryptomeria japonica as ornamental plants. In particular, we grow those with a dwarf habit which includes ones with a globe, fastigate, or conical form or ones with variegated or persistently juvenile foliage.

Cryptomeria japonica tolerates a wide variety of garden sites but prefers rich, well-drained soils. Although Cryptomeria japonica prefers full sun, we have found them to also perform well in part to light shade. When you're ready to buy cryptomeria for your perennial garden, we hope you'll check out our online offering of dwarf cryptomeria for sale.

We are pleased to share the amazing, but virtually unknown Cryptomeria 'Champagne', a recent Camellia Forest Nursery introduction of a dwarf sport of Cryptomeria 'Knaptonensis', discovered years ago by David Parks at the defunct Yadkin Valley Nursery in North Carolina.
