Dicentra

Dicentra is one of my favorite groups of woodland perennials. The list of new Dicentra varieties is ever expanding, with new selections being made available almost every year. From the typical clumpers, to the new hybrids, to the climbing members of the genus, most dicentra selections are easy to grow with a long bloom season of delicate-looking flowers.

Dicentra plants feature spectacular flowers in yellow, white, pink, and red. The clump-forming species dicentra spectabilis is a spring ephemeral plant that sprouts in February, flowers from March to May, and then goes dormant and disappears by July. The vining species Dicentra scandens toughs out the summer above ground and produces yellow flowers until autumn frosts arrive. Some dicentra species prefer partial shade and slightly moist soils while others such as Dicentra perrigrina prefer dry sun. Dicentra flowers also attract butterflies and hummingbirds to the garden. The plants are deer-resistant too. Through the decades, we have made several wild collections of the US native (Michigan south to Georgia) Dicentra eximia, but none have performed as well in our hot climate as this seed strain from near the famous Dolly Sods Wilderness Area in West Virginia's Tucker County. Expect a clump 18" tall x 3' wide in 5 years. If they begin to look tired during the growing season, don't hesitate to cut them to the ground. If it's not too late in the year, they will quickly resprout from the clusters of growth buds at the base. In fall, the old foliage of bleeding heart can be cut to the ground to make the plant look tidier.

Growing Conditions:

Although most Dicentra eximia prefer light shade, our selection, 'Dolly Sods' prefers full sun, and does not like shade. Anywhere from 2-8 hours of sun daily is fine. Despite its appearance, 'Dolly Sods' is also quite drought tolerant, although it tolerates regular irrigation as well.

Natural Impact:

Dicentra eximia is a favorite of bees, so when the plants are in flower in spring and summer, you'll have some happy bumblebees in the garden.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Dicentra-eximia-Dolly-Sods.i-1264.s-67746.r-1.jpg?v=1791810192
dicentra-spectabilis-valentine-pp-22739
Dicentra spectabilis Valentine PP 22739

(aka: Lamprocapnos spectabilis, Dicentra 'Hordival') We'll never forget the euphoria we felt when we first saw the hot new Dicentra 'Valentine' flower in our garden. What we had feared might be a Photoshopped catalog image was every bit as good or better in person. Instead of long sprays of pink heart-shaped flowers in spring, the outer petals are brilliant red, with the contrasting white inner petal beneath...simply stunning! Even the very dark green foliage of the 2' tall x 2' wide clump has a hint of red as it emerges. Dicentra 'Valentine' was discovered in 2005 as a seedling in the production field of Phyllis and Lyle Sarrazin of British Columbia. This isn't just a minor change from typical Dicentra spectabilis...it's a major breakthrough! This calls for a re-write of those poetic lines...Dicentras are red, violets are blue. If you don't order soon, you'll be blue too.

Maintenance Info:

Dicentra spectabilis 'Valentine' goes summer dormant when the temperatures rise, and usually just fades away, without the need for any cutback. We recommend marking the planting location just in case you get the urge to go planting in summer and forget when your bleeding heart is located.

Growing Conditions:

Light shade and rich, evenly moist soil is the best conditions for all of the Dicentra spectabilis cultivars. Too much deep shade greatly reduces their flower power, while a couple of hours of early morning sun can actually cause them to produce more flower stalks.

Natural Impacts:

Dicentra spectabilis is a cleistogamous species, so it does not need a pollinator.
