The sole species, Engelmannia peristenia (formerly E. pinnatifida), is native to the prairie states south into northern Mexico and grows in open grasslands, roadsides, and desert-scrub sites on alkaline soils. The many yellow, daisy-like flowers of engelmannia shine from late spring until late summer.

Engelmannia is a tough plant that tolerates heat and drought to produce a 2' tall and wide, well-branched flower cluster atop a basal rosette of highly lobed leaves. Engelmannia tolerates a wide variety of growing conditions including clay soil, and attracts butterflies and birds. If you can get to the ripe seeds before the birds do, you can propagate your engelmannia and share it with friends. Engelmannia has a deep taproot and is best transplanted during winter or early spring when it is in its rosette growth stage. You are likely to see Engelmannia in its natural state along roadsides from South Dakota south to Texas. The clumps are adorned with fuzzy green leaves that resemble an oversized gaillardia.
