Erythronium

The genus Erythronium contains about 20 species of tulip relatives native to North America and Eurasia. Erythronium species have tongue-shaped leaves. Some leaves are mottled with brown or purple trout-like spots, others are dappled with fawn-like white spots and some are plain green. The former two groups are more highly sought after by rabid dog's-tooth violet fans.

Underground, Erythronium plants produce tooth-shaped bulbs. Some Erythronium species have edible and apparently tasty bulbs and leaves but other species are slightly toxic and are used as a contraceptive and emetic.

Erythronium are woodland or meadow plants and prefer humus-rich, well-drained soil. Plant your Erythronium bulbs where they will receive ample sunlight in March and April, but progressively more shade later on. Erythronium flowers are held in a downward-facing position at the tip of a j-shaped flower stalk. Most erythroniums flower in early spring and go summer dormant, so don't freak out when they "die" in July. In our garden, this rare solid silver leaf selection of the typically mottled species has shown amazing vigor, forming a 2' wide patch, that increases steadily via short rhizomes. For us, the summer dormant clumps are topped in early April with large, bright yellow flowers. Erythroniums flower from tiny tubers that aren't much larger than pencil leads, so don't freak out at the size. Each pot contains 2 tubers. In the garden, moist compost is best. Our quantities of this new release are extremely limited.

Watch our Plant Spotlight video for more information.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Erythronium-americanum-Silver-Pigeon.i-15563.s-65809.r-1.jpg?v=1779465224
erythronium-rostratum-texas-runner
Erythronium rostratum Texas Runner

Erythronium rostratum 'Texas Runner' is an Aaron Floden collection from Sabine County, Texas, of the little-known, US-native beaked trout lily, which ranges from Ohio south to Texas. The heavily mottled foliage emerges for us in early February and is topped with large, out-facing bright yellow flowers starting in late February. This is the earliest of our Erythronium rostratum selections to emerge, and Aaron wonders if this may represent a new, undescribed species. Our 7-year-old plants have spread via underground runners to make a 3-4' wide patch. In the wild, these grow in moist, low woodland, but we have found them to perform exceptionally well in typical well-amended, average moisture garden soils. These stunning spring ephemerals are dormant by late April.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Erythronium-rostratum-Texas-Runner.i-12213.s-67393.r-1_92ac02a9-5dba-41d5-80fb-007c3cf7b5fa.jpg?v=1788548339
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/collections/Erythronium-rostratum-Newsome-Sinks-1900x350.jpg?v=1683659689
