If you are careful and patient, you can also collect the spores and grow them into new ferns, but that process requires careful attention to detail takes the better part of a year to complete. Collect the spores. Remove all the chaff. Sprinkle them into a pot and keep the soil moist and the air very humid until the gametophytes form...these look like fingernail sized leaves on the soil surface. Then splash a little water on the surface of the gametophyte to allow egg and sperm to be released and to mix. Continue to keep the pot moist for several months until the baby ferns start to grow off the surface of the gametophytes. Voila! Keep an eye out for fungal rot which frequently occurs when the air is too still and humid for too long. The newly growing fronds are called fiddleheads and in the spring when they are 1"-2" tall, you can harvest certain species of fern fiddleheads and steam or boil them thoroughly to break down toxins and then saute them with lemon and butter. They are considered an ephemeral spring delicacy. Try Lady fern (Athyrium filix-femina), Ostrich fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris), and Cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea) fiddleheads. The bracken fern is also edible but may be carcinogenic in high doses. A few ferns have edible roots too. Polypodium glycyrrhiza from the northwest US has a root that is chewed to release a sweet licorice flavor. The short, limp, sterile fronds have little value except to highlight the rigidly erect, narrow, fertile fronds that give the plant its anorexic but architectural structure. Our offering of Asplenium platyneuron 'Brunswick Giant' is a 2003 Plant Delights/JLBG introduction, spore propagated from our original collection from Brunswick Co., NC, where it stood 18" tall in dry shade. About the only thing ebony spleenwort doesn't like is wet soils.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Asplenium-platyneuron-Brunswick-Giant.i-5226.s-68568.r-1_603f993b-b9c3-45d8-8636-c213ccac5978.jpg?v=1790969006
dryopteris-erythrosora-brilliance-autumn-fern
Dryopteris erythrosora Brilliance

Dryopteris erythrosora 'Brilliance' is a selected form of autumn fern that has brighter red new growth than what is typically seen with spore-grown plants. Frankly, all autumn ferns have great color when the new fronds emerge from the evergreen clump, so this is really something special. Autumn fern is a very easy-to-grow, deer-resistant fern making a 2' wide clump that is tolerant of a wide range of garden conditions, including extreme drought once established.

Maintenance:

The only maintenance we recommend for Brilliance Autumn fern is to cut the old foliage to the ground in spring just prior to the emergence of the new leaves. Usually the evergreen foliage gets tattered overwinter, and the ornamental potential of the plant is diminished when the old foliage isn't removed. Do not remove the foliage any earlier, since it helps keep the ground cool and the new growth from sprouting too early. Dryopteris erythrosora typically only produces one growth flush per year, so never remove the foliage during the growing season, or there is a good chance your plant will die.

Growing Conditions:

Dryopteris erythrosora prefers rich, evenly moist soil, but also has reasonably good drought tolerance. Light shade is ideal, but autumn fern also can tolerate a couple of hours of early morning sun when the temperatures are cool.

Natural Impacts:

Autumn fern is quite deer resistant, so is a great choice in areas with high deer pressure. The only animal we've notice that is attracted to it is Homo sapiens, so you'll want to protect your plant from pesky neighbors with shovels.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Dryopteris-erythrosora-Brilliance.i-5293.s-64292.r-1.jpg?v=1790018081
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/collections/Arachniodes-standishii-Mt.Daisen-1900x350.jpg?v=1680112757
https://www.plantdelights.sbs/collections/fern-plant-hardy-ferns-perennial-outdoor-garden.oembed?page=3
