Juniperus

One of the most ubiquitous plants in the American landscape is no doubt the overused/misused juniper. Fortunately there are some wonderful juniper cultivars that are not overused including a number of wonderful US natives. We have chosen our favorite rare juniper cultivars to offer you. Most junipers prefer full sun and have a particular fondness for heat.

Junipers provide a nice evergreen backdrop in the garden, especially in the winter when everything else is dormant. In addition, junipers produce small, tightly packed cones that look like berries. Juniper 'berries' are not only attractive, but are used as an herb to flavor gin and meat dishes. Some juniper cultivars are upright shrubs and others are prostrate growing. The latter group of junipers are perfect for growing over walls, on fences and on hillsides. Junipers also work great as container plants, alone or paired with colorful flowers. When you are ready to buy a specialty juniper for your perennial garden, we hope you'll check out our online offering of junipers for sale.

We were blown away with Juniperus 'All Gold' when we first saw this in Pat McCracken's North Carolina nursery in 2009. We collect conifers, but we'd never seen anything quite like this brilliant selection of the common shore juniper, Juniperus conferta. As it turned out, Juniperus 'All Gold' is a sport from Juniperus 'Blue Pacific' discovered by Pat's friend, Leo Koelewyn, a conifer nurseryman in Monbulk, Australia. The mat of soft golden foliage will eventually reach 15'+ wide...our 8-year-old plants are now 10' wide.
