We have spent quite a bit of time evaluating kniphofia species and cultivars for their garden performance and hope you enjoy our ever-expanding offerings. Most red hot pokers are quite easy to grow in bright sun and good garden soil. It is not uncommon to find red hot poker plants growing and producing their beautiful flowers in long abandoned homesites.

Kniphofia in the Garden

Kniphofia flowers are traditionally a gorgeous bright orange and yellow color although there are tons of new cultivars on the market with pokers in shades of cream, yellow, red, and even flourescent hues. The common name "red hot poker" is accurate as kniphofia flowers look like they just emerged from a botanical forge. They are also reminiscent of giant Fourth of July sparklers. Kniphofia has a wide range of flowering times from mid-spring through late fall, depending on the selection. Hummingbirds and butterflies, like gardeners, are attracted to the colorful flower spikes of the red hot poker plant.
