Lonicera

When people in the southeast US think of lonicera, they usually think of the sweet-smelling but invasive Japanese honeysuckle vine, Lonicera japonica. Fortunately, there is a much more to this genus than just this one vine. The genus lonicera is fairly large, containing over 150 species of both woody vines and shrubs, many of which have ornamental value. Lonicera flava is primarily a northeastern US species, that reaches its southern range in Arkansas, where this selection was discovered. Lonicera flava grows in both rocky soils and swamps, and although it prefers a near neutral pH, this is not a requirement. For those unfamiliar with Lonicera flava, take Lonicera sempervirens and cross it with a shrub, and you get the idea. Larry's selection has superbly rich orange flowers, which are also quite unusual for Lonicera flava. For us, Lonicera 'Eureka' starts flowering in mid-April, when it's enjoyed by bumblebees, hummingbirds, and humans.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Lonicera-flava-Eureka.i-9553.s-66518.r-1.jpg?v=1791470852
