Manettia

The genus Manettia contains about 80 species, all of which are herbaceous or woody vines native to tropical parts of the Americas. Only a few Manettia species are cultivated...most as annuals or greenhouse plants (M. bicolor, M. luteorubra etc.). However, one species, Manettia cordifolia, is cold hardy and makes a nice dieback vine for the Southeast.

Manettia vines are not tall, only 10' or so, and do not appear until temperatures have warmed. Manettia cordifolia does not have the candy-corn look that is so popular on the house plant Manettia, but its tubular red flowers are quite striking and attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Manettia prefers full to part sun and a well-drained, consistently moist soil. If you want a red and yellow candy-corn color theme, try combining Manettia cordifolia with Dicentra 'Athens Yellow'. Firecracker vine emerges in very late spring and is an elegant twining vine with tiny leaves climbing skyward on anyone or anything nearby. Starting in mid-summer and lasting well into fall, the vines burst forth with tiny, 1", red-orange blooms that look like miniature firecrackers (red with a yellow tip)...irresistible to hummingbirds. Firecracker vine grows just fast enough to be garden-worthy, but not fast enough to be a pest...simply exquisite!
