This short cast iron plant forms a 16" tall patch of arching green leaves, each lightly speckled with dull yellow spots. The miniature pizza-like flowers appear at the base of the stalks in February. Each leaf can last up to 3 years, but after the second year, it will begin to show signs of aging and leaf degradation. For that reason, we recommend removing all old foliage regularly to retain the attractiveness of the clump. It's always disappointing to see large patches of cast iron plants in public spaces where it hasn't been properly maintained.

Growing Conditions:

Cast iron plants grow well in both moist and dry soils as long as the drainage is good. Aspidistra must be grown in shade, since their foliage will scorch if they are subjected to sun. In the jungles where they grow, they are often seen in very deep shade.

In containers, they make superb house plants. The common name cast iron plant speaks to their durability in less than ideal conditions. Sadly, most authorities still lump this with the smaller, and much more difficult to grow Trautvetteria caroliniensis. Trautvetteria nervata, an Actaea cousin, is one of the finest perennials we grow, emerging first as a basal clump of cut-leaf foliage. The 3' tall flowering stalks of this bog denizen emerge almost immediately, and open for us in mid-June with substantial, dense umbels of white baneberry-like flowers, creating a superb show. Agave 'Bluebell Giants' resulted from a 2014 cross of our largest Agave x protamericana with another giant, Agave x pseudoferox 'Bellville'. Our goal was to produce the largest known, Zone 7b winter hardy agave in existence. While many of the offspring we planted were not winter hardy, this clone stood out both for hardiness and size. Our original, vigorously offsetting clone, planted in 2016 reached 6' tall x 9' wide in seven years, so give this plenty of space.
