Onoclea

The sensitive fern, Onoclea sensibilis, gets its "sensitive" reputation from the fact that the fronds die back very quickly after the first autumn frost arrives. The roots, however, are quite tough...making onoclea a cold-tolerant, drought-tolerant, deciduous fern. Most ferns produce their spores on the undersides of every frond, but onoclea produces separate fertile fronds. The fertile fronds of onoclea plants are quite ornamental and display cinnamon colored clusters of bead-like spore bearing structures.

Onoclea prefers moist conditions, and in its native habitat (which includes North Carolina) lives close water. If sited properly, onoclea will slowly spread to form a nice colony. In the wild, it looked larger than any form we'd seen, but never in our wildest dreams did we expect it to reach 3.5' tall, even in half day sun...normal is 2' tall. The stipes, which hold the fronds, emerge a lovely bright red. Although moist soils are preferred, sensitive fern is amazingly drought-tolerant. Sensitive ferns spread by non-aggressive rhizomes just below the soil surface and will make a 6' wide deer-resistant clump in 5 years. Insulting or otherwise dissing a sensitive fern is considered a hate crime in the blue states, but say what you like in Texas!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Onoclea-sensibilis-Texas-Too-Tall.i-8279.s-68188.r-1_0551ac4b-9ac9-471c-8144-3ea9dda7e298.jpg?v=1790172431
onoclea-sensibilis-supersize
Onoclea sensibilis Supersize

In 2007, I was tromping through a bog in Horry County, SC, and spotted a patch of the deciduous sensitive fern that seemed much larger than the typical size plants that grew nearby. Upon planting a rhizome in our home garden, it didn't let me down, producing leaves much larger than normal. The giant 3' tall fronds (2' tall is normal) are comparable in size to our other giant Onoclea, 'Texas Too Tall'. When the fronds of Onoclea sensibilis 'Supersize' emerge in spring, they also have a nice red central stipe, whose color later fades in the heat. Moist rich soils will produce the largest size plants.
