One species, Pachysandra terminalis, is widely used as an evergreen groundcover for shady sites where nothing else will grow. The other popular species is the US (and North Carolina) native Pachysandra procumbens, which is a much slower spreader. Pachysandra is perfect under shallow-rooted trees and other problem sites. Gardeners have selected a handful of cultivars over the years, the best of which we offer to you.

Growing and Caring for Pachysandra

Pachysandra spreads by rhizomes and slowly covers open ground to form a thick 8" deep colony. Although slow to fill in, after 3 or 4 years, your pachysandra will be a thick carpet of leaves that will choke out any weeds that try to grow. Pachysandra prefers woodland conditions...acidic, consistently moist soil that is rich and well-drained. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and deer-resistant. When growing in well-prepared organic soils, it is generally pest free.

I'm going to Jackson is more than a great Johnny Cash song...it's where we headed in search of another heat tolerant selection of native pachysandra. Pachysandra procumbens 'Jackson' is our 2022 introduction of our 2003 collection, grown from a single division of a nicely spotted clone we found in Jackson County, Florida. It goes without saying that any Pachysandra procumbens native to Florida is going to have good heat and humidity tolerance. For us, our original patch of Pachysandra 'Jackson', reached 6" tall x 5' wide before we chopped into it to share. The patch is adorned with 4" tall stalks of fragrant white flowers that emerge from the ground, starting for us in late March.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Pachysandra-procumbens-Jackson.i-16627.s-66689.r-1.jpg?v=1791907008
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/collections/Pachysandra-procumbens-Jackson-1900x350_48c7fe43-2314-47a4-8259-0cb49e92f3d5.jpg?v=1687284655
