It helps to understand their normal life cycle: New daylily foliage is produced after winter gives way to spring. It is at this time quite clean and fresh and lovely. Yet it often becomes shabby by bloom time, it has worked so hard to produce all of its flowers. As the floral display is winding down the plant starts to put up a whole new flush of foliage. The flawless fresh new foliage might go unnoticed by the unobservant gardener but it is produced nevertheless. If at this point the whole plant is cut back hard, either to the ground or to several inches tall, not only will all of the spent flower stalks be removed but so too spring's now shabby foliage. What one is left with is clean foliage for the remainder of the growing season. And the process of cutting it back takes only a few minutes at most per plant.

Another time to cut daylily foliage down is after frost has killed the foliage. Both Helleborus x hybridus and Helleborus niger produce both leaves and flower stalks directly from the subterranean crown of the plant. The crown of a plant is a compressed stem and is characteristic of many herbaceous perennials such as Hostas and Hemerocallis (daylily). In contrast, Helleborus foetidus has a substantial aboveground stem that averages 18 to 24" tall. Individual stems have a two year life span. They are produced in the spring and they are well clothed with their dark green palmately divided leaves. Come late fall numerous paler green bracts and flower buds start to form at the apex of the stem. Soon they become a foot tall candelabra of pendant green bells. The pale green glows in the winter garden, especially on a overcast day. What Helleborus foetidus lacks in colorfulness (nothing actually) it makes up for in its very handsome architecture.

By summer the seeds are mature and shed from the fruit as the fruit open. At this point the whole stalk has completed its life cycle and need to be cut to the ground, leaving the new vegetative growth. Do NOT be discouraged by the following information: Helleborus foetidus has more of a live fast, die young life cycle than Helleborus x hybridus and Helleborus niger, which seem to live forever. Helleborus foetidus tends to be a permanent addition to a garden even though individual plants might live for just three to five years, because there are enough seedlings to replace old plants. Seeds start to germinate in late fall, with additional germination through the winter. With good care a seedling can bloom in about one year, certainly in two. And they transplant readily so the gardener can plant them where they are wanted. Space the seedlings about a foot apart.

Natural Impact:

Helleborus foetidus belongs in every garden where winter interest is desired and this species can be grown.

We are glad to provide what we think is one of the finest hostas ever introduced and the winner of the Hosta of the Year Award for 2012. This (4-2-2) tetraploid sport of Hosta 'Sagae' makes a stunning 2' wide, semi-upright clump. The extraordinarily thick, dark green leaves of Hosta 'Liberty' are edged with an astonishingly wide, golden yellow border, changing to cream in summer. In early summer, the slow-growing clumps of Hosta 'Liberty' are topped with spikes of hummingbird-friendly lavender flowers. We are pleased to offer large 2-year-old plants.

Maintenance:

Hosta 'Liberty' is essentially a maintenance free perennial. Once the plant has gone dormant in fall, you may wish to remove the old foliage, which helps tidy the garden. Old flower stalks may be removed after flowering, which we feel helps with clump appearance.

Growing Conditions:

Hostas always grow better in rich, moist soil. Hosta 'Brother Stefan' is a hybrid of Hosta 'King Tut' x Hosta 'Mildred Seaver'. Each 22" tall x 3' wide clump of thick, heavily-corrugated, golden foliage is edged with a wide border of blue-green. Although Hibiscus aculeatus likes moist feet, we have had very good luck growing it in raised sandy berms with regular watering. The 4' tall fuzzy stems are clothed with lobed, okra-like leaves.
