Rock Garden Plants

What is a rock garden?

Rock Gardens are landscape features designed to mimic high-altitude alpine landscapes, mountain-sides, desert canyons, steep river banks or any other ecosystem where the ground is rocky and loose. In the wild, alpine and other rocky ecosystems tend to be windy, free-draining and harsh and thus are populated by drought-tolerant plants that survive by staying small. Rock gardens are an artistic simulation of these ecosystems and feature small hardy perennials growing among artfully arranged rock outcrops. The goal of a rock garden is to feature small attractive rock garden plants that might otherwise be overlooked or out-competed in another type of garden bed such as a perennial border.

What are the best rock garden plants?

Some rock gardeners feature alpine plants in their rock gardens while others focus on small desert succulents. Still others will put any small, tough plant that deserves special attention into a rock garden. Plants that naturally grow in cold mountainous regions (especially the Alps) are known as alpine plants and plants that naturally grow on rock outcrops or among loose rocks are known as saxatile plants or lithophytes. These rock garden plants are almost always hardy perennials like sedum, but beyond that they can be deciduous or evergreen; bulb or fibrous rooted; flowering, grass, fern or conifer; leafy or succulent; native or exotic; and sun- or shade-loving. As long as they are small and tough, they are appropriate. Although we are not exclusively a rock garden nursery, we have filtered through our enormous on-line plant catalog and selected the best hardy perennials for rock gardens.

Building a Rock Garden - Crevice Garden

We've established an impressive crevice garden here at PDN. The peak time to do this is late winter. At this time the shrubs are cut back by a half to two thirds to remove the dead tops of the plant. This does not require precision. It is a method meant to allow quick clean up of these woody salvias. Of course, any totally dead stems should also be removed. The health of the plant will not be compromised if it is not cleaned up but one will be viewing the current year's flowers amongst last year's dead flower stalks. They are often called "Autumn Sage" for their peak bloom is late summer into fall, though in the humid eastern US they tend to bloom continuously from spring into fall. This is the only routine maintenance that these salvias need.

The selections of Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla and Salvia x jamensis vary in their vigor. The most vigorous individuals might occasionally need to reined in where they have spread too far if space is limited. But these are the exception to the rule in these normally stationary plants. Excess plants can be dug out and replanted elsewhere if desired.

Growing Conditions:

Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla and Salvia x jamensis are sun lovers; more sun the better. They are also drought tolerant but also tolerate wet spells if provided with adequate drainage:not excessive drainage, just any soil where water doesn't pool after a rain. They are often called "Autumn Sage" for their peak bloom is late summer into fall, though in the humid eastern US they tend to bloom continuously from spring into fall. Extended dry spells in summer can decrease blooming as is typical in their native range of Texas and Mexico.

Nomenclature:

The genus Salvia consists of about one thousand species. A few are annuals, most are perennial. The perennial species can be either herbaceous or woody. The woody perennial species are most often shrubs though there are some salvias that are trees. Gardeners from cold climates are often surprised to learn that some salvias are shrubs.

Natural Impact:

Salvia greggii, Salvia microphylla and Salvia x jamensis can be counted on for nearly six months of bloom in a wide range of color. They are the type of long blooming plant that are good foils for the show stoppers that come and go such as lilies that are in bloom for a few weeks. They are also highly favored by hummingbirds and other pollinators. Both Helleborus x hybridus and Helleborus niger produce both leaves and flower stalks directly from the subterranean crown of the plant. The crown of a plant is a compressed stem and is characteristic of many herbaceous perennials such as Hostas and Hemerocallis (daylily). In contrast, Helleborus foetidus has a substantial aboveground stem that averages 18 to 24" tall. Individual stems have a two year life span. They are produced in the spring and they are well clothed with their dark green palmately divided leaves. Come late fall numerous paler green bracts and flower buds start to form at the apex of the stem. Soon they become a foot tall candelabra of pendant green bells. The pale green glows in the winter garden, especially on a overcast day. What Helleborus foetidus lacks in colorfulness (nothing actually) it makes up for in its very handsome architecture.

By summer the seeds are mature and shed from the fruit as the fruit open. At this point the whole stalk has completed its life cycle and need to be cut to the ground, leaving the new vegetative growth. Do NOT be discouraged by the following information: Helleborus foetidus has more of a live fast, die young life cycle than Helleborus x hybridus and Helleborus niger, which seem to live forever. Helleborus foetidus tends to be a permanent addition to a garden even though individual plants might live for just three to five years, because there are enough seedlings to replace old plants. Seeds start to germinate in late fall, with additional germination through the winter. With good care a seedling can bloom in about one year, certainly in two. And they transplant readily so the gardener can plant them where they are wanted. Space the seedlings about a foot apart.

Natural Impact:

Helleborus foetidus belongs in every garden where winter interest is desired and this species can be grown. It's also far more moisture tolerant than its cousin, so give one a try and don't worry...be lazi.

These deer-resistant hellebores are seed grown from our plants at Juniper Level and have been selected for their single red-violet flowers. The rigidly upright form and very shiny, deer-resistant foliage make this a great plant, even for the small garden. From May through July, and again from September through November (NC), the 3' wide Salvia 'Big Pink' is topped with a stunning array of large, violet-pink flowers (RHS 57C). They bloom for about six months but are not self-cleaning and the spent flower stalks are retained until a tidy minded gardener comes along and trims them off.

These features and their low-maintenance make them very valuable part of a sunny garden, including a xeric garden.

Watch our Plant Spotlight video for more information.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Salvia-greggii-Big-Pink.i-2615.s-64061.r-1.jpg?v=1792096041
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/collections/Tricyrtis-Crow-Leaf-1900x350_6817cc5f-28fe-4afb-8e09-afec732cdad4.jpg?v=1744400774
