Romulea

Romulea is a genus of 90 or so species from Europe, Asia and Africa. It is a bulb-plant (corms actually) in the Iris family (Iridaceae) and like its irid cousins, Romulea is an attractive, colorful flowering perennial with lots of garden potential. Romulea is named after Romulus, one of the founders of Rome and is so named because some species are prominent in Italy.

Romulea is a small, crocus-sized plant that is closely related to a few other plants we sell, namely, Crocosmia and Gladiolus. Like most of irids, Romulea is easy to grow...just give it reasonably well-drained soil and full sun. You will be rewarded with a small spring-flowering clump that will re-seed around the garden. After flowering, Romulea goes dormant for the summer, so don't be surprised by its disappearing act. Try pairing Romulea with other smallish perennials like Ajuga, Allium, Sempervivum, Sedum or a dwarf Ophiopogon.
