Saururus

Saururus is a genus of just two species, S. cernuus and S. chinensis. Saururus cernuus is a North American native plant found in the eastern half of the US from Texas to Maine. Saururus chinensis is, as the name implies, Asian. The common name, Lizard's Tail, is derived from the shape of the fruiting structure, as it has a somewhat herpetological quality to it. Saururus is a marginal aquatic plant and grows best in consistently moist sites such as along the edge of a pond or bog. In a good site, Saururus will spread via underground rhizomes to form a dense patch of vegetation.

Our colonial ancestors used Saururus as a sedative and tumor suppressor. In the 1950s, Saururus was discovered to have antipsychotic properties, too. Saururus is a relative of another popular perennial plant, Houttuynia, which also favors moist sites. Like its botanical cousin, Saururus has pleasant citrus-scented leaves and flowers. I was thrilled to receive this much more controlled, variegated form, from our friend, local naturalist Jesse Perry, who discovered it Hertford, NC. Plant Delights/JLBG were pleased to subsequently introduce Saururus cernuus 'Hertford Streaker' in 2014. It's right at home in moist soils, where it interweaves nicely with other moist soil lovers like hosta and moisture-tolerant ferns. The 2' tall stalks of new foliage emerge creamy white, with a central green pattern. Because of the reduction in leaf chlorophyll, full sun can result in some leaf scorch. In mid-June (NC), the stalks are topped with white antennae-like flower spikes. We are pleased to once again offer this amazing perennial.

Watch our Plant Spotlight video for more information.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Saururus-cernuus-Hertford-Streaker.i-4917.s-68202.r-1_67b4dab4-513c-482a-a712-1387d2552f30.jpg?v=1791564438
