Tanacetum

Tanacetum is a genus of around 160 species, many of which have been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes to treat migranes and menstrual problems. The chemical compounds in tanacetum are very toxic, even in low doses, making them problematic to take internally. The leaves, when applied in a poultice to the skin, treat bites and stings and repel insects.

Tanacetum is closely related to mums and Shasta daisies and has swapped many species between these groups over the years. It is a great little perennial with its finely dissected, fern-like, fragrant leaves and button-like, yellow flowers. The crushed leaves are said to smell like a mix of camphor and rosemary.

Tanacetum (Tansy) Growing Conditions

Tansy is easy to grow, as it tolerates many different soil types and sunlight levels. It grows best in well-drained, average soil in full to part sun. Tanacetum is drought-tolerant, once established, and will spread via rhizomes to form an attractive colony. Although, the wild varieties can be weedy if they are not promptly de-flowered, there are several well-behaved cultivars.

As a garden designer, there aren't nearly enough bright gold foliage, well-behaved perennials, but one of the finest is certainly Tanacetum 'Isla Gold'. This herbal garden beacon was shared in 1999 by friend and gardening expert Viki Ferreniea, and introduced by PDN to the American market in 2001. The deciduous clump to 18" tall x 3' wide emerges in early spring, with foliage so bright, it's visible from 50' away. In rich soils, a mid-summer cutback may help it look fresh into the fall. The amazing Tanacetum 'Isla Gold' originated in the now-defunct Isla Nursery in Cambridgeshire, UK.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/files/Tanacetum-vulgare-Isla-Gold.i-4219.s-68205.r-1.jpg?v=1790176324
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1527/8799/collections/Tanacetum-vulgare-Isla-Gold-1900x350_6a65e59d-5016-4034-b744-b581a70b528a.jpg?v=1688587679
