Verbascum

Verbascum is a genus of around 250 species of short-lived perennials native to Europe and Asia. Their tough nature and attractive flowers have lead gardeners to spread Verbascum all over the world. One of Verbascum's best traits is its ability to withstand drought and to grow well in dry soil.

Like Tephrosia, Verbascum leaves contain rotenone, a potent insecticide and piscicide (kills fish) which also allows them to repel deer. The flowers have traditionally been used medicinally to treat skin and intestinal diseases and some people have been known to smoke Verbasum. But of course, here at Plant Delights, we grow Verbascum for its ornamental traits, not its medicinal traits. Verbascum's colorful flowers are produced on tall flower spikes atop the silvery leaves and last a long time from late spring into summer. In the wild, Verbascum tends to grow in lean soil and in the garden, a rich soil may cause it to flop over.

Rock gardens and cottage gardens are the perfect place to plant the informal-looking mullien plants.
