The word "viola" is derived from the Greek word "ion," meaning "violet" or "purple." This eventually evolved into the Latin "violāceus," which means "violet colored." Over time, the word "viola" came to be associated not only with the flower but also with the color itself. From Latin, the word entered various European languages, including English, retaining its association with the flower and the color.

Violet is one of the earliest colors used by humans and traces of violet pigment derived from manganese have been discovered on Neolithic cave paintings dating as far back as 25,000 years. Later, ancient Egyptians and Romans sourced violet die from the secretions of the murex snail native to the Mediterranean region. Though the process was tedious and labor intensive, the resulting Tyrian purple die was far more brilliant and long-lasting than purples and violets from botanical sources. The peak time to do this is late winter. At this time the shrubs are cut back by a half to two thirds to remove the dead tops of the plant. This does not require precision. It is a method meant to allow quick clean up of these woody salvias. Of course, any totally dead stems should also be removed. The health of the plant will not be compromised if it is not cleaned up but one will be viewing the current year's flowers amongst last year's dead flower stalks.
