Plants go dormant during the worst weather of the year in order to conserve their energy for better times. In certain parts of the world, winter is the best time of year to grow and flower because due to geography, that is when the rains fall. Plants that are native to these parts of the world are winter flowering plants because it makes sense to grow in the winter and avoid the hot arid summers of their native homes. The crown of a plant is a compressed stem and is characteristic of many herbaceous perennials such as Hostas and Hemerocallis (daylily). In contrast, Helleborus foetidus has a substantial aboveground stem that averages 18 to 24" tall. Individual stems have a two year life span. They are produced in the spring and they are well clothed with their dark green palmately divided leaves. Come late fall numerous paler green bracts and flower buds start to form at the apex of the stem. Soon they become a foot tall candelabra of pendant green bells. The pale green glows in the winter garden, especially on a overcast day. What Helleborus foetidus lacks in colorfulness (nothing actually) it makes up for in its very handsome architecture.

By summer the seeds are mature and shed from the fruit as the fruit open. At this point the whole stalk has completed its life cycle and need to be cut to the ground, leaving the new vegetative growth. Do NOT be discouraged by the following information: Helleborus foetidus has more of a live fast, die young life cycle than Helleborus x hybridus and Helleborus niger, which seem to live forever. Helleborus foetidus tends to be a permanent addition to a garden even though individual plants might live for just three to five years, because there are enough seedlings to replace old plants. Seeds start to germinate in late fall, with additional germination through the winter. With good care a seedling can bloom in about one year, certainly in two. And they transplant readily so the gardener can plant them where they are wanted. Space the seedlings about a foot apart.

Natural Impact:

Helleborus foetidus belongs in every garden where winter interest is desired and this species can be grown. In a climate where most primroses fear to tread, Primula 'Dale Henderson' has been a star for more than a quarter century, getting better every year to the point that we finally have enough to share. The vigorous clumps are topped, starting in March, with 6" tall spikes ending in a cluster of cerise-coral flowers, highlighted by a yellow center. We can't say enough great things about this a superb selection. Average to slightly dry soils are perfect.

Maintenance:

Primula 'Dale Henderson' requires very little maintenance. Removing spent flower stalks will improve its appearance. Its foliage is clean and attractive nearly all year long, though it is normal for the foliage to become a bit raggedy by late summer and to even suffer from spider mites at this time. Worry not, for its normal life cycle is to produce fresh foliage in early fall which will sale through winter unfazed by cold weather. So remove tired foliage as it starts to put up new foliage in early fall. It is at this time of the year that it is best to divide old clumps for they will quickly re-establish as they resume active growth in the fall. Clumps can be divided down to single crowns if one wants to maximize the number of new plants, and nearly every division will flower come spring. Old clumps can be divided into smaller clumps if one doesn't want to go as far as dividing into single crowns. Water in well after planting new divisions and continue to water if rains are sparse while fall remains warm.

Growing Conditions:

Light shade and average moisture and drainage suit Primula 'Dale Henderson' best.
