Every US state is home to at least one native Woodsia species. Because woodsia species hybridize frequently in the wild, many hybrids occur where their habitats overlap.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMany woodsia species live as lithophytes on cliffside rocks, thus the common name, cliff fern. Woodsia ferns are generally small, usually around 6\" tall. As you might expect from its cliffside habitat, woodsia plants like more sun than most ferns. The plants can take full sun in the morning but need some shade in the afternoon. Woodsia plants also prefer well-drained soils and regular watering.
