Native from Virginia west to Texas, the southeastern native Cypripedium kentuckiense has performed wonderfully for us, making large 18\"+ tall clumps, topped in early- to mid-May with large, creamy, pocketbook-shaped flowers, highlighted by dark purple twisted sepals, in turn adorned with yellow flecking. Slightly moist, organically rich soils are needed for best performance of Kentucky ladyslipper orchids. In containers, we like to add Permatill (popped slate) or a Pumice like product. Average moisture levels are great, but be certain soils do not remain waterlogged.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eLady slipper orchids are woodland plants, and most species do not have any sun tolerance. We have found that light, high shade is ideal.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003ePlanting is critical, as roots must be spread horizontally just below the soil surface and not stuck deep in the ground as is the case with virtually all other plants.
